Riverfront streetcar on track to surpass $34.9M budget, leaving project team to find new funding
The riverfront streetcar’s $34.9 million budget breaks down into $20.7 million from a federal BUILD grant and Federal Transit Administration formula funds, plus $8.5 million from Port KC, $4.75 million from the Streetcar Authority and $1 million from KCATA. A Port Improvement District around riverfront properties will support the future streetcar’s operations and maintenance.
The extension previously was pegged at $25.7 million, before its initial 0.55-mile scope was stretched further east along the riverfront, closer to the Kansas City Current’s future stadium.
Gerend said the authority anticipates a construction contract for the extension will be completed by year’s end and work should start soon in the new year. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.
